Fanfic/Story pet peeves

  • Jan. 3rd, 2009 at 6:54 PM

Here's a list of things that I don't like in fanfics or original stories:

1. "So and so woke up and it was all a dream" endings. Most people don't like stories where ends up to be a dream. That usually ruins the story. It also seems very unprofessional and amateur.

2. Out of character pairings. There should be a damn good reason why two characters who hate each other end up falling in love with each other. For example: FFVII Yaoi fans pair Vincent Valentine up with Hojo. Sorry, that does NOT work. They hate each other. And if Hojo were to pair up romantically with someone from the game, it would more than likely be Jenova. Sorry yaoi girls.

3. Pop culture references in fantasy worlds. Anyone seen "The Neverending Story III". That is the perfect example why fantasy worlds and modern earth pop culture don't mix. I've seen Final Fantasy stories with references to popular singers and Valkyrie Profile fanfics with references to popular video game titles. No, just no.

4. Using broken Japanese, Korean or other broken languages in a fic. I hate reading fics where it's an English, but characters say Japanese phrases like "Baka" and "Kawaii". Titles of the story in a foreign language may work, but just having characters spout off "Kusou" and "Shimatta" in an English language fic does NOT work. Use English, or Japanese or Korean, DON'T USE ALL THREE LANGUAGES TOGETHER IN A STORY! Makes you look like an idiot.

5. Intentionally using poor grammar. I know for some, English is not the author's first or even second languages, I can forgive that. But using poor grammar to be "cute" is NOT cool.

6. Stories with no character development. I'm sick of the villains or monsters that are evil and bad for no reason. Give them a reason for being good or evil. Nobody likes one dimentional stereotypes. Give your characters personality, that's all I'm asking of you.

7. People who sugar coat over unpleseant topics. That just insults the intelligence of the more mature readers when you do that. If you want to deal with unpleaseant issues, tell it like it is. Don't be afraid. Just don't treat your fans like mentally retarted five year olds.

8. People who use gameplay references in video game fanfics. You are writing a story, not playing a video game. No need to put save points, HP, MP and leveling up in a story you are telling. That's just tacky.

9. Stories where someone dies and gets brought back to life again. And no, I'm not talking about reincarnation either. I'm sick of people bringing the dead hero back to life in his own body by magic. If you want to kill and ressurect a character, use references to the afterlife (heaven, hell, etc.) or have reincarnation involved. Ressurecting the hero like he/she is just childish and patronizing to the audience.

10. Self Insertions. As much as I hate to admit this, but there are cannon Mary Sue characters that can be likeable and interesting. But putting yourself in a video game/anime/movie world is just bad. Original characters are just fine, as long as they are interesting and/or likeable. Self Insetions just come off as being amateurish and egotistical.

I think for the most part I agree with you here. Although, to be fair, it wouldn't hurt to look over this list. You've got a LOT of spelling errors and there's a fair bit of irony in that fact.

You remind me of some of my good friends back on Cats On Mars! before it went the way of the dodo. I think we'll get along well. :D

Oh, sorry about my bad spelling. I don't do that intentionally, it's just that I have a learning disabillity, so math and spelling are not on top of my list.

But before you judge me, for the most part, I am pretty intelligent and graduated from High School. Thoughout my K-12 years, I barely flunked a class (I only flunked algerbra). I have many hobbies and I keep practicing at them, so I could be good with them. Sorry about the spelling, just had to clear that up.

Oh, no worries
I wasn't judging you, just pointing out, haha. No worries.
